Living Beneath the Banner of ISIS
Raqqa, Syria -- A FEW weeks ago, my friend Saeed tried to get his family out of Raqqa, the city in eastern Syria that since 2014 has been the de facto capital of the self-declared Islamic State. ''It's becoming very hard to get any kind of work in Raqqa,'' he told me. He was depressed that he'd failed in his attempt to smuggle his family over the Turkish border to the north. Isis recruit says 'spectacular' is planned
A FORMER London student who has returned from the battlefield in Syria has told investigators that Isis wants to carry out a terrorist spectacular involving simultaneous attacks across Britain and Europe. If they were to happen, the co-ordinated attacks, probably targeting London and other European capitals, could easily overshadow last month's shootings and suicide bombings in Paris, which killed 130 people. Harry Sarfo, 27, an Isis recruit who spent time in the terrorist group's stronghold of Raqqa earlier this year, has told German security officials that virtually all foreign fighters are being asked if they will return to their home countries to carry out attacks.
