9/11: Tenth Anniversary
On 11 September 2001 (9/11), nineteen hijackers staged a terrorist attack so devastating that it fundamentally altered American society. The terrorists—members of the al-Qaeda network—seized control of four commercial airplanes. Two were crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. One was crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. The fourth airplane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania after passengers struggled to wrest control of the aircraft from the hijackers. Nearly three thousand people died in the attacks. Ten years later, many of the U.S. government's key post-9/11 goals have been met. However, the long shadow of terrorism still lies over many aspects of American life, from politics to transportation to civil liberties.
